Role Title: Investment Associate – Custom Portfolio Solutions & Analytics (Associate Level)

RiverFront Investment Group is a global asset manager headquartered in Richmond, VA. We view culture as a differentiator and people as our greatest asset. We strive to create a collaborative, energetic work environment that supports associate growth. We have an unwavering commitment to excellence and meeting the evolving needs of our financial advisor partners and their clients.

Location: Richmond, VA
Department: Investments: Custom Portfolio Solutions (CPS)
Reports To: Global Equity CIO

Job Summary

We are seeking an Investment Associate to join our Custom Portfolio Solutions (CPS) team. This role is designed for a high-performer who has mastered the fundamentals of investment operations and is ready to take on more significant responsibilities in quantitative tool development and equity research.

You will sit at the intersection of our client-facing service model and our internal investment engine. You will be responsible for a 70/30 split between the development of proprietary tools that drive our research and scalability and high-touch advisor support/portfolio management.

Key Responsibilities

70% – Quantitative Development & Sector Research

  • Tool Enhancement: Improve and expand our existing library of Matlab, SQL, and VBA tools. You aren't just using the tools; you are identifying bugs and adding features.
  • Fundamental Research: Own a dedicated equity sector. Produce independent research notes, maintain valuation models, and pitch ideas to the Investment Committee.
  • Data Automation: Create automated workflows to pull and clean data from external providers (Bloomberg, FactSet, etc.) into our internal SQL environment.

30% – Portfolio Management & Advisor Consultation

  • End-to-End CPS Ownership: Manage the lifecycle of custom portfolio requests, from initial proposal generation to ongoing rebalancing and tax-loss harvesting.
  • Complex Case Handling: Act as the primary point of contact for advisor relationships, providing sophisticated analysis on portfolio tilts and market positioning.
  • Peer Review: Provide a "second set of eyes" on work produced by entry-level analysts to ensure data accuracy and adherence to firm standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; field of study flexible with relevant experience
  • 1.5+ years of experience in quantitative asset management, or a data-heavy financial role.
  • Proven ability to write clean, documented code (Proficiency in SQL is a must)
  • Strong understanding of equity valuation, portfolio theory, and the financial advisor landscape.
  • CFA Level I/II

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • VBA and Matlab experience a plus (or strong Python background)

Work Environment

This position is based in our Richmond, VA headquarters. The individual in this position will operate in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and all-in-one copier/scanner/printer/fax machines. Ability to work remotely (virtually) periodically to support business operations is also required.

Physical Demands

This role requires the ability to lift (up to 10 pounds), to move about within an office environment, and to sit and/or stand for the duration of a typical workday. The role always requires the ability to communicate with others (verbally and in written form). The ability to view data and information on computer screens and on printed materials is also required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
