Standardized Patient

A Standardized Patient (SP) is a person who is trained to act as a patient to help medical students and other healthcare professionals practice and assess their clinical skills. SPs are used in a variety of settings and training methods, including:

• Simulation activities: SPs can be used in computer-based virtual environments, high-fidelity mannequins, and task trainers.

• Clinical examinations: SPs can be used in observed structured clinical exams (OSCEs).

• Interactive teaching: SPs can be used in interactive teaching environments and group demonstrations.

• Videos: SPs can be used in videos.

SPs are trained to portray a patient's personal history, physical symptoms, emotional characteristics, and everyday concerns. They are also coached to provide constructive feedback to students from the patient's perspective.


SPs are essential to the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals. They are a significant resource for teaching and evaluating clinical skills, such as communication, history taking, physical examination, patient counseling, and patient education.


This is not full-time work or a guaranteed # of hours per week/per month.

• Reliability, flexibility, and punctuality are essential.
• Excellent memorization, recall, and communication Skills.
• Ability to be objective and follow directions.
• Basic computer skills.
• Previous Standardized Patient experience preferred but not required.
• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED), associate or bachelor's Degree preferred.
