CAMPAIGN ORGANIZER

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible

Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Starting Salary Range: $70,000 - $80,000

Location: New York State, with a strong preference for someone located in the Mid-Hudson or Capital Region.

About the Right to Counsel Coalition

The Right to Counsel Coalition is a tenant-led coalition that formed in 2014 to disrupt Housing Court as a center of displacement and stop the eviction crisis that has threatened our families, our neighborhoods, and our homes for too long. Our Coalition is made up of tenants, organizers, advocates, legal services organizations, and more! Our work is rooted in principles of dignity, diversity, equity, humanity, and justice. After a hard fought, three-year grassroots campaign, we won and made NYC the first city in the nation to establish a Right to Counsel for tenants facing eviction. Our campaign has inspired a movement across the country.

We believe Right to Counsel isn’t just about ensuring tenants have attorneys in housing court. It’s about fighting to reclaim our communities, to keep people in their homes, and to denormalize the violence of evictions. We are building campaigns for an eviction free New York and ultimately for a right to housing. Our work is grounded in a history of tenant organizing and the belief that housing is a human right. Since winning the Right to Counsel in 2017, we have been working to ensure that the Right to Counsel law is implemented in a way that upholds the right, that builds tenant power, and that transforms the courts into a place that upholds the dignity and humanity of every tenant. We are also running campaigns to change the laws to stop evictions in NYC and across the state, supporting Right to Counsel campaigns nationally, supporting the development of passionate and zealous attorneys committed to tenant power, and expanding and strengthening Right to Counsel so that it extends to all tenants.

Role Description

With guidance and support from the Coalition Director and Campaign Director, the Campaign Organizer leads core organizing and legislative work, develops member leadership, and advances coalition strategy through base-building, direct action, and political education. The Campaign Organizer coordinates and implements tactics that advance the Coalition's priority campaign demands within its broader Housing Court Must Change! campaign, while strengthening the Coalition's organizing infrastructure and deepening member engagement.

THE WORK WILL INCLUDE:

Campaign Strategy Development and Implementation

• Lead the development and implementation of assigned campaigns and work areas.
• Develop and execute campaign plans, tactics, and organizing strategies in collaboration with the Campaign Director and coalition members.
• Support coalition members in implementing campaign strategy in ways that deepen organizing and increase member engagement.
• Coordinate and advance tactical campaign work including coalition-wide and local actions; communications and narrative work; legislative and political work; data, policy, and research; popular and political education, and more.
• Develop and update campaign materials for a variety of audiences and purposes. This includes, 1-pagers and talking points for our coalition members, fact sheets for use with legislators and the general public, materials for workshops and panel discussions (e.g. presentations), etc.

Coalition Building and Member Relationships

• Develop and sustain deep relationships with organizers, tenant leaders, and our broader base in connection with assigned campaign and work areas.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, engage in agitational and relational work, and provide training to strengthen member leadership and participation.
• Work in collaboration with organizers to identify, recruit, and support new tenant leaders into the campaign work.
• Help strengthen local and regional organizing infrastructure connected to the coalition’s campaign priorities.

Political Education and Leadership Development

• Develop and facilitate political and popular education tied to campaign priorities.
• Support leadership development of tenant organizers through campaign engagement and skill-building.
• Integrate political education into campaign strategy as a core and necessary tool for organizing and base-building.
• Proactively identify and develop campaign-related political education materials, workshops, and discussions.

Legislative and Political Work

• Maintain and develop relationships with elected officials and agencies within assigned campaign areas, in coordination with Campaign Director.
• Support advancement of legislative priorities through relationship building, coalition organizing, and narrative work targeting elected officials.
• Ensure that the campaign work has a strong grounding in tenant organizing principles and ongoing analyses of power.

Campaign Infrastructure and Coordination

• Prepare for, facilitate, and participate in coalition-wide campaign, committee, and working group meetings.
• Maintain systems to document, track, and assess assigned campaign and work areas.
• Collaborate with the Campaign Director to ensure tactical alignment across coalition-wide strategy, and develop and update the campaign plan and calendar.

POSITION TYPE: Full Time, Exempt. While some work can be from home, this position requires in-person work for regular outreach, meetings, actions, etc.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS :

• At least 4 years of grassroots organizing experience in either tenant or labor organizing.
• At least 2 years experience managing issue campaigns.
• A demonstrated commitment to social justice.
• Strong base building, community outreach, and leadership development experience.
• High attention to detail, meticulous, organized, and thorough in your work.
• Ability to multitask and manage different areas of work effectively.
• Ability to take initiative and work as a team.
• Very strong communications and media experience, in both traditional and social media.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

• Sabbatical: RTC employees may be eligible to take a sabbatical of 2 months after they have worked at RTC for 5 years.
